Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited said a fire at its Mangaluru refinery had been brought under control on September 30 after a high-pressure cold separator ruptured in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit. Its dated statement, filed with the National Stock Exchange that afternoon, places the incident around noon.
MRPL said the affected unit had been isolated and its emergency-response and firefighting teams were handling the incident. It cautioned that firefighting work could continue for some time as part of safe management of the site. The filing does not give a damage estimate or a timetable for restarting the unit.
The company reported one person with a minor injury who had been taken to hospital and was receiving treatment. It said no major injuries had been reported in its account at that point. Business Upturn and News Karnataka carried the same account on September 30, consistent with the original filed statement.
Earlier local reports carried differing injury figures, which have not been independently reconciled with a consolidated hospital or police tally. The company’s count should therefore be read as its dated account. The identified equipment failure also does not, by itself, establish why the separator ruptured or whether any safety lapse contributed to the incident.
