Mumbai Port Authority declared Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal plastic-free on October 2 during its Gandhi Jayanti programme. The Shipping Ministry presented the announcement as part of efforts to reduce single-use plastic across port operations.
Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also dedicated oil-spill-response facilities during the programme. The authority said it would continue plastic-reduction efforts at docks, residential colonies and coastal areas. Sanitation workers were recognised for their contribution to everyday port operations.
The Week’s October 2 report places the announcement at a terminal handling crude oil and petroleum products through five jetties. It says the fifth jetty, completed in December 2020, is 470 metres long and can handle vessels carrying up to 150,000 tonnes of cargo.
The declaration describes an environmental-management milestone rather than a change in the terminal’s oil-handling role. The reviewed announcement does not set out an independent audit methodology or quantify plastic waste eliminated. Those limits matter when assessing how the stated status will be maintained over time.
