The Supreme Court declined interim relief on October 1 to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction seeking to operate four Indian Bank accounts frozen by West Bengal Police. LiveLaw and PTI reported that the bench asked the Calcutta High Court to expedite the pending matter while expressly avoiding a decision on its merits.
Party counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the freeze disrupted regular operations and challenged the police action. State counsel Tushar Mehta opposed relief, referring to the investigation and factional dispute. Those competing submissions remain arguments, not findings of wrongdoing.
The fresh development is the Supreme Court’s response to the plea, not a new account freeze. These four accounts are separate from three HDFC accounts considered in earlier proceedings. The court did not determine ownership of the funds or resolve the underlying allegations.
