Chennai’s police commissioner has issued preventive-detention orders under the Goondas Act against Gem Granites owner R. Veeramani, Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan, police said on October 1. The three were already in custody in connection with allegations of sexual offences against children.

Dinamani and other Tamil outlets reported the new action on Thursday, with ANI subsequently carrying the police account. A Tamil Nadu Police special investigation team is examining the allegations and related complaints. This is a new preventive-detention step, distinct from the earlier arrests and the September 30 refusal of bail to two accused.

The orders are not convictions in the child-protection case. The allegations must be examined through the criminal process. No response from the three to these specific detention orders was available in the consulted reports. No child’s identity, family information, image or identifying account of the alleged abuse is included here.
