Demonstrators gathered at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2 to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revision. The Cockroach Janta Party, led by Abhijeet Dipke, held the protest despite Mumbai Police’s earlier refusal of permission.

Dipke told the gathering that the agitation could continue for three months, The Indian Express reported. Protesters raised concerns about voting rights and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. These were the demonstrators’ allegations and demands, rather than findings of an inquiry.

Actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, singer Vishal Dadlani, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj and Tushar Gandhi attended, according to the Express. NDTV reported that Azmi and other participants spoke about democratic rights; the demonstration brought together activists and supporters amid a substantial police deployment.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected the allegations, saying the Election Commission had already answered them. The commission has maintained that decisions concerning the revision were unanimous. Police had cited restrictions on gatherings at Shivaji Park and its silence-zone status when declining permission.
