The Supreme Court on September 30 fixed October 15 for hearing contempt petitions concerning Indian Police Service deputations to the Central Armed Police Forces alongside a challenge to the law governing those appointments. Justices Manoj Misra and Ujjal Bhuyan heard the matter.
The petitions had disappeared from another bench’s September 29 list before the hearing. The registry said the Chief Justice had directed their placement before the special bench. The judges questioned why the original bench and other parties had not been informed.
Government lawyers apologised over the communication lapse. The Centre argued that its response to the contempt allegations depended on the legislation being challenged. Counsel for a petitioner disputed the need to combine the proceedings.
