The Food Ministry announced on October 1 that sugar dealers will face a 1,000-quintal stock ceiling and a 15-day holding period from October 15 to November 30. Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas, along with Assam, will have a 2,000-quintal ceiling. These restrictions are announced for a future start date.
The change tightens an earlier September arrangement. The ministry’s September 1 release set a 2,000-quintal ceiling from September 15, retained 4,000 quintals for Kolkata’s extended metropolitan area, and allowed stocks to be held for up to 30 days after receipt. Contemporary Economic Times reporting also described that earlier reduction.
The new dealer rules should not be confused with a limit on how much sugar a household may buy. Nor does announcing lower inventories prove that retail prices have already fallen because of these future restrictions. This report describes the ministry’s announced measure; its implementation and effects remain to be assessed.
