Mohammad Akhlaq was killed after a mob attacked him in Bisada, near Dadri, on 28 September 2015 over allegations of cow slaughter. His son Danish survived serious injuries. The attack and the later conduct of the prosecution are separate questions of accountability.
On 23 December 2025, a Surajpur court rejected the Uttar Pradesh government’s request to withdraw the prosecution. The state cited inconsistencies in witnesses’ accounts. Akhlaq’s wife opposed withdrawal, with her counsel alleging political motivation; the court found no sufficient basis to end the prosecution.
The judge directed faster hearings. Refusing withdrawal did not convict the accused or decide every disputed fact. This archive records that dated ruling; any later trial judgment or appeal must be verified separately before the case is described as resolved.
