Special Gram Sabhas were held on October 2 to open India’s People’s Plan Campaign for 2026–27, the Panchayati Raj Ministry said in an evening statement. The campaign is intended to prepare panchayat development plans for the financial year 2027–28. This is a report of the launch, following the earlier announcement of the meetings.

The ministry said more than 2.42 lakh meetings had been scheduled on two official portals. Its statement also described discussions taking place nationwide, but did not supply a meeting-by-meeting completion audit. The scheduled total should therefore not be read as an independently verified count of assemblies completed.

Residents, elected representatives and officials discussed water, sanitation, livelihoods, land rights and local finances, according to the ministry. ANI’s October 2 report carried the account and said public suggestions would inform the development plans. NorthEast Now separately reported meetings in Manipur’s Kakching district that day.

The campaign brings together 21 Union ministries and departments. Identifying local priorities is an early planning step: the launch does not establish that every proposal has been approved, funded or built. Village-level decisions and their subsequent implementation remain distinct from the national government’s account of the exercise.
