Congress named former India hockey captain Pargat Singh as its Punjab president on October 2, hours after Amarinder Singh Raja Warring formally submitted his resignation. The appointment takes immediate effect, according to the party announcement reported by The Times of India and news agency UNI.

The order signed by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal retained the state unit’s working presidents and the chairpersons and co-chairpersons of election-related committees. UNI’s October 2 report says the party also recorded its appreciation for Warring’s work.

Singh represents Jalandhar Cantonment and has been an MLA since 2012. The Indian Express reported that he previously served in the Punjab Police and held ministerial responsibilities in the Charanjit Singh Channi government, including education and sports.

The change supplies the name of Warring’s successor ahead of Punjab’s 2027 Assembly election. Warring’s earlier resignation and Friday’s appointment are distinct developments; the new order does not announce a chief-ministerial candidate.
