Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab, has suspended regular classes for ten days from September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations until further notice. The interruption follows violent protests on September 27 over an allegation that a student was sexually assaulted on campus. The university denies that the alleged assault occurred.
Police have registered a case against an unidentified person and formed a special investigation team. Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said investigators would examine forensic material, CCTV recordings and phone data. Registering the case opens an investigation; it does not establish that the alleged offence occurred or identify a guilty person.
The unrest involved damage to campus property and a blockade of the highway outside the university. Students sought stronger hostel security and accountability. LPU has advised those remaining on campus to stay in their hostels or residences and avoid unnecessary movement. A revised exam timetable is to be communicated separately; the postponement should not be read as cancellation of the examinations.
