Odisha launched a 44-day campaign for child-labour-free gram panchayats on October 2. The Times of India and IANS reported Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s launch message and the statewide awareness effort.

The programme focuses on identifying and preventing child labour, supporting education and making communities aware of children’s rights. The Times of India reported special gram sabhas and village awareness activities on Friday.

The campaign is scheduled through November 14. OdishaBytes’ October 1 planning report said schools would identify children missing education, check records, visit families and refer suspected child-labour cases to labour authorities. These steps are planned follow-through, not completed rescues.

IANS noted that the last dedicated state survey was in 1997. Its historical count cannot describe the number working today. The launch establishes a programme of action; current identification, school-return and rehabilitation results will be needed to assess what it achieves.
