Tezpur University announced on October 3 that it had been chosen to host a Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese. EastMojo’s report cites the university’s release issued that day. The underlying Education Ministry memorandum is dated October 1.

The ministry’s memorandum names five host institutions. Alongside Tezpur for Assamese, it designates Visva-Bharati for Bengali, Deccan College in Pune for Marathi, the Central University of Odisha for Pali and the Central University of Gujarat for Prakrit. The centres are intended to support research, digitisation and preservation of these languages’ heritage.

Tezpur says the new centre will build on its existing Assamese studies work, including manuscript preservation and translation.
