Surat City Police said on October 4 that its cyber-crime cell had apprehended a woman over an Instagram reel involving Mahatma Gandhi’s image. The Times of India reported that the arrest took place on Sunday. The official statement described the video as objectionable and insulting; that characterisation is the police’s allegation.

The Times of India and the Gujarati edition of The Indian Express identified the accused as Simran Amit Patel. According to their police accounts, she allegedly uploaded the reel on October 1 using Gandhi’s photograph on a ₹500 banknote with sexually suggestive remarks or gestures. The upload and the October 4 police action are separate events.

The reports said a citizen’s complaint led to a case under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. Police said officers used a technical investigation to establish who operated the Instagram account. The official October 4 thread confirms action in the Gandhi-image video case, without setting out the full evidence or a judicial finding.

The sources reviewed do not include a response from Patel or her lawyer, a remand order, or a court decision on whether the video meets the legal test for the alleged offence. The arrest is a procedural development and does not establish guilt. No later court outcome was verified for this report.
