Manipur’s Cabinet approved one-time assistance of ₹10 lakh each for the next of kin of 49 people reported missing in connection with violence that began on May 3, 2023. The decision was announced after the October 1 Cabinet meeting, according to same-day reports by Eastern Mirror and Northeast News.

Eastern Mirror reported that government spokespersons Thokchom Radheshyam and Sapam Ranjan Singh explained the measure at an evening briefing in Imphal. The state will provide ₹4.90 crore. Officials said the people remain untraced despite search efforts and that their families have faced prolonged hardship.

The government’s stated reason for the special measure is that families of missing people do not have documents such as death certificates and post-mortem reports required under the central compensation arrangement. Northeast News reported that families of people killed in the violence had received ₹10 lakh each; the new decision extends state-funded help to the specified missing-person cases.

This is approval of humanitarian assistance, not confirmation that the 49 people are dead. The reviewed reports do not establish that the approved money has reached families. The new development is the October 1 relief decision; the underlying disappearances relate to the conflict that started in 2023.
