Odisha’s State Commission for Women has asked Bhubaneswar police for a detailed report within 15 days on a woman’s allegation of rape by an intruder. The intervention was reported on October 2 by PTI and OdishaBytes. It follows the alleged assault on the night of September 30, rather than a newly reported attack.

Commission member Urmila Mohapatra visited the police station handling the case on October 2 and discussed the investigation with officers, PTI reported. She said the government was taking the matter seriously and that investigators were working to establish what happened.

Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Saravana Vivek M told PTI that several teams had been formed and described the investigation as being at an advanced stage. OdishaBytes reported that officers were examining CCTV footage and conducting searches. The accounts reviewed did not announce an arrest.

The complaint alleges that the intruder threatened the woman with an object described as a gun. Whether it was a firearm has not been established in the material reviewed. The commission’s request seeks accountability for the investigation; it is not a finding of guilt. AsalSach is withholding the survivor’s identity, address and personal circumstances.
