The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a Western Coalfields Limited senior civil overseer in Maharashtra's Umred area on September 30 after allegedly catching him accepting ₹40,000 from a contractor. The agency's account was reported by Loksatta, The Live Nagpur and the Free Press Journal.
According to the CBI, the contractor had complained on September 29 that the official demanded ₹50,000 in connection with releasing payment for completed work. The project involved two borewells, submersible pumps and drinking-water pipelines at a rehabilitation site. The Free Press Journal put the relevant work bill at about ₹25.35 lakh.
The agency said it verified the complaint, registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and arranged the September 30 trap. The demand alleged in the complaint and the sum allegedly accepted during the operation are different figures: ₹50,000 and ₹40,000 respectively.
The arrest is a stage in the corruption investigation, not a court finding of guilt. The reviewed reports did not contain the official's response or a subsequent court order. They also do not establish that other WCL employees or the company as a whole participated in the alleged conduct.
