Students at Ahmedabad’s Nirma University wore black and protested on October 1, demanding stronger hostel security and a transparent investigation into alleged indecent conduct near a women’s hostel. The demonstration followed circulation of a video and students’ complaints about the administration’s handling of the matter.
The university’s chief security officer had approached Sola police on September 30 concerning an unidentified person. According to the complaint reported by The Times of India, the alleged incident occurred on September 29. Inspector K N Bhukan said officers were checking where the video was recorded and identifying people present at the construction site.
Students sought a written response, an impartial inquiry and action based on its findings. Some also alleged that security staff responded to their concerns by commenting on their clothing. That allegation remains the students’ account; the individual shown in the video had not been publicly identified in the reports reviewed.
The Indian Express said it could not reach the university’s acting director general for comment. Police inquiries and demands for institutional accountability remain ongoing; the protest does not establish anyone’s criminal guilt.
