The Gujarat High Court on September 30 declined Asaram’s request for 20 days of temporary bail to visit his hospitalised wife. Justices Gita Gopi and L. S. Pirzada considered a police verification report and information from her treating doctors before refusing release. The four-page order was reviewed for this report.
Asaram’s lawyer, Ashish Dagli, sought release on humanitarian grounds, saying his client was concerned about his wife’s condition. Public prosecutor Hardik Dave opposed the application, arguing that the medical information did not show an urgent need for release. The bench noted that she had responded to treatment and that doctors expected discharge within two or three days if her condition permitted.
The court also recorded that relatives and others were looking after her. It said Asaram, who is held in Jodhpur, could ask the jail superintendent for permission to speak with his wife by video conference. That is permission to make a request; the order does not establish that a call has been approved or taken place.
Asaram is serving life sentences in two rape cases. PTI’s September 30 report says his appeal against the Gujarat conviction remains pending. This order concerns only the temporary-release application and does not overturn either conviction. Bar and Bench’s court report independently confirms the refusal and the video-call option. Identifying details of the survivors are not included.
