IIT Bombay students began a hunger strike on October 2, seeking an independent investigation into Sahil Wakode’s death. PTI and the Free Press Journal reported the new protest following campus agitation.
The students want an external panel and object to members they allege supported Professor Suryanarayana Doolla. They also seek his suspension from responsibilities and director Shireesh Kedare’s resignation. These are protesters’ demands, not findings against either official.
Wakode died on September 18. His family alleges caste-based discrimination, and the Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating. An earlier September 27 Times of India report said the institute had constituted a committee and sent Doolla on leave to facilitate an impartial inquiry.
The October 2 reports did not establish the allegations or provide a fresh administration response to the hunger strike. Students also sought safe campus access for the family and protection from disciplinary action for participation.
