The Supreme Court stayed the execution of Ahmed Bawa, also known as Abbu Abubakar Barelvi, on October 1 while considering his challenge in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial-blasts case. Independent reports by LiveLaw, Bar & Bench and PTI agree that the court issued notice to Gujarat. PTI also reported a direction to obtain the trial court record.

Defence counsel argued that the conviction rested on an allegation of conspiracy. PTI reported that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasised the seriousness of the case. The bench comprised Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and Augustine George Masih.

The blasts killed 56 people in July 2008. A special court imposed the death sentence in 2022, and the Gujarat High Court upheld it in July 2026. Today’s protection concerns this appellant’s execution while his challenge is considered; it does not establish acquittal, commutation or release. The signed Supreme Court order and a next hearing date were not available in the material reviewed.
