Ranchi police arrested three people on Sunday, October 4, in investigations into chain-snatching incidents reported the previous day in the Bariatu and BIT Mesra areas, according to The Times of India and local reports. Police allege the suspects are linked to the Korha group from Bihar.
Local reports said police took the suspects on a trip to recover weapons. Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan told The Times of India that one man took a constable’s pistol and fired while the group attempted to escape, after which police firing injured him in the leg. This remains the police account of the use of force.
Newswave Jharkhand and Kohram Live reported that the injured suspect was taken to hospital. Police are examining possible links to other snatching cases in Jharkhand and Bihar. Alleged gang membership and involvement in earlier offences are investigative claims, not findings of guilt.
The reviewed reports contained no response from the suspects or their lawyers, and no independent finding on the shooting. A medical report, remand order and separate account of the encounter were not available for review. The arrests do not establish responsibility for the alleged offences.
