DRI disclosed eight arrests on October 2 in an alleged gold-and-diamond smuggling investigation at Mumbai airport. The statement dates the initial interception to September 30.
DRI said an airport worker was intercepted while passing diamonds to a Dubai-bound passenger. Investigators subsequently intercepted six transit passengers. The agency reported 23 capsules containing gold dust mixed with wax, weighing 8.564 kg gross, and diamonds valued at approximately ₹1.09 crore.
Separately, Free Press Journal reported that the worker was employed at an airport food outlet and that officers intercepted the handover near a departure-gate washroom. Its account said two Sri Lankan suspects were sent to judicial custody.
The newspaper reported 8.320 kg of gold; that figure should not be confused with the agency’s gross capsule weight. The reviewed reports provide no substantive defence response. Arrests and alleged statements to investigators do not establish guilt.
