Delhi Police registered a criminal case on October 4 following the death of an IIT Delhi doctoral scholar who had been receiving treatment at AIIMS since August. Police accounts carried in PTI’s and India Today’s October 4 reports place the new FIR at Kishangarh police station, one day after the scholar died in hospital.

According to police, the case was registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which concerns abetment of suicide. Officers said they acted following Supreme Court directions and a complaint from IIT Delhi’s security officer. The reports reviewed did not reproduce the complaint, the FIR or the court order being relied upon. Registration of the case does not establish that any person committed an offence.

The police account places the earlier incident on August 18, when the scholar was found injured and unconscious at rented accommodation in Munirka. He was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and remained under treatment for more than 45 days before his death on October 3. Police emphasised that the incident occurred outside the institute’s campus.

Officers also said that family members and witnesses had not raised suspicion or made allegations against any individual during the proceedings. That statement is the police’s description of the material gathered so far; it is not an independently obtained family account or a final determination of what happened.

The circumstances of the injuries and death remain under investigation. Police cited CCTV footage and recorded statements among the available evidence. The reviewed reports did not announce an arrest, identify an accused person or report a judicial finding about responsibility. The October 4 development is the registration of the criminal case, rather than a newly established cause of death.
