Assam’s Cabinet approved a 12% reservation for Assam-domiciled former Agniveers in recruitment to 11 categories of state posts on October 4. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision in an official summary of Sunday’s meeting.
The covered services include Assam Police, the Assam Police Radio Organisation, the State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services, forest guards and the Excise department. Sarma said the measure was intended to give Agniveers an opportunity to serve their home state after completing their four-year military tenure. It applies to specified recruitment categories, rather than all state government jobs.
The Cabinet also approved a green cess on the transfer of vehicle ownership to support afforestation and conservation. Electric and CNG vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers are exempt, as are transfers following the vehicle owner’s death. The published decision summary does not state the rate or when collection will begin.
The Cabinet approved agreements with the Bodoland Territorial Council, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong council areas on rural water-supply schemes. These cover implementation, operation, monitoring and long-term sustainability under the Jal Jeevan Mission and related programmes.
For Guwahati’s Brahmaputra riverfront, the Cabinet approved engaging Tata Consulting Engineers to prepare a detailed project report for the second phase, from Kachari Bazar to the foothills of Nilachal Hills. This authorises planning work; construction approval or completion is not established by the announcement.
