The Special Investigation Team examining the September 27 violence at Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute submitted its first report on October 1. Akashvani’s October 2 account and Bengali newspaper Ei Samay both reported the submission of a six-page document.
Akashvani said the report went to West Bengal’s Home and Hill Affairs Department. It reported that investigators had reviewed video material, identified 250 people and questioned 23. Identification or questioning does not make a person an accused, and these figures are not a count of people found responsible.
Ei Samay reported that students intended to continue their academic boycott despite a statement from the vice-chancellor. A student representative said the statement did not adequately address accountability. The same report recorded the administration’s position that student safety, dignity and a peaceful return to academic work were priorities, and that violence in an educational institution was unacceptable.
The confrontation occurred during a programme involving the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat. Students and organisers have offered conflicting accounts. The first-report submission is distinct from the earlier formation of the inquiry team; it does not itself settle those allegations. Asal Sach has not reviewed the complete investigation document and is not presenting its contents as final findings.
