India completed three consequential Asian Games boxing semifinals in Aichi-Nagoya on September 29: Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal advanced to their gold-medal bouts, while Narender Berwal finished with bronze in the men’s over-90-kilogram category.
Parveen defeated China’s Li Shu by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women’s 65-kilogram semifinal at Nishio Gymnasium. She won all three rounds and became the third Indian woman to reach an Asian Games boxing final, after M. C. Mary Kom and Lovlina Borgohain. Final qualification guarantees at least silver, but the gold-medal bout was still pending at this report’s cutoff.
Ankush recovered after losing the opening round of his men’s 80-kilogram semifinal against Uzbekistan’s reigning world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev. He took the second round, swept all five judges’ cards in the third and won the bout 4-1, earning a place in the final. That result is a semifinal victory, not yet an Asian Games title.
Narender lost all three rounds of his heavyweight semifinal to Kazakhstan’s reigning world champion Aibek Oralbay, with the judges returning a 5-0 decision. Reaching the last four secured Narender the bronze. His medal moved India’s running Games total to 48—five gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze—at the reporting cutoff; the tally remained provisional as later events continued.
