The Supreme Court on 8 January 2024 set aside remission granted by Gujarat to eleven men convicted in the Bilkis Bano gangrape and killings case. The state had released them on 15 August 2022. The underlying crimes date to 2002, outside this archive’s post-2014 incident period.
The court held that Gujarat was not the government competent to decide remission because the trial took place in Maharashtra. It directed the men to report to prison authorities within two weeks. Gujarat had defended its remission decisions, which Bilkis Bano challenged.
This entry tracks a post-2014 exercise of state power, not a newly dated account of the original attack. The quashing of remission should also be distinguished from later temporary parole orders, which do not themselves cancel a conviction or grant permanent release.
