Six Congress workers were sent to judicial custody on September 29 after a protest at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s ancestral home in Agra. The Times of India, in a report updated on September 30, quoted an Agra Police statement saying a court remanded the six until October 3. Those arrested included Anil Yadav and Mukesh Dhangar.

Citing the FIR and police officials, it said police alleged that demonstrators defaced the property, tried to enter it and assaulted a home guard. The registered offences include attempted murder and rioting. These are police allegations, not findings that the arrested workers committed those offences.
Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib disputed the police action. In a September 29 interview with ANI, published by Asianet Newsable, he described the demonstration as peaceful and alleged that false provisions had been invoked to intimidate party workers. He said the campaign would continue.
The protest itself took place on September 28 amid Congress objections to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The new development is the following day’s arrest and remand action.
