Police in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district are investigating the deaths of two ascetics whose bodies were found in a burnt condition at a religious site in Sutha village on October 1. A local man was detained for questioning, according to police accounts reported by ABP and The New Indian Express.

Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit said police were informed around 7 a.m. Officers and a forensic team examined the site under Khudaganj police station, collected evidence and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. ABP identified the deceased as Gopal Das, 70, and Bihari Das, 60.

A written complaint from the site's caretaker, Shiv Kumar, and preliminary accounts from villagers alleged that the suspect had wanted the ascetics to leave so he could control the premises. Police are examining that possible motive.

The allegation has not been established in court. The exact sequence of events, including the relationship between the deaths and the fire, remains subject to medical findings and the continuing investigation.
