Train operations began on the new Mokama rail bridge around midnight as October 4 turned into October 5, East Central Railway spokesperson Saraswati Chandra told The Indian Express. He identified train 15483, Mahananda Express, as the first service to cross.

The opening followed safety clearance after inspections on October 3 and 4. IANS separately reported completion of the Commissioner of Railway Safety’s inspection of the bridge, track doubling, electrification and associated station works. The signed safety clearance and commissioning record were not available for independent review.

Built alongside the existing Rajendra Pul, the new crossing has two railway lines. The approximately 15.5-kilometre project includes a 1.9-kilometre main bridge. IANS reported a project cost of about ₹2,400 crore, along with connecting viaducts and other bridges.

Railways says the older crossing will also remain in use, giving this Ganga crossing three railway lines. The added route is intended to help passenger and freight movement between north and south Bihar. Expected traffic gains and lower freight costs remain projections, rather than results measured since the opening.
