A special court in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar sentenced a married couple to life imprisonment on September 30 for a murder committed in January 2024. PTI and Dainik Dehat reported that the court also imposed a ₹50,000 fine on each of the two convicts.
Government counsel Ashish Kumar Tyagi told PTI that the convictions were under the Indian Penal Code provisions for murder and wrongful confinement. Special Judge Vijay Kumar delivered the ruling. Although the matter was heard by a special SC/ST court, the available account identifies these IPC convictions and does not establish a separate finding of caste motive.
The prosecution said the victim, Ankit, was called to the couple's home and fatally assaulted on January 7, 2024. Wednesday's development is the sentencing, rather than a new killing. The reviewed reports did not reproduce the full judgment or state whether the couple intended to appeal.
